Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner in Purple

Every gal as their one makeup item they can’t do without. As much as I love my lacquer, for me, I’d probably say it was eyeliner. Eyeshadows? Meh. Mascara — I’ll bother putting it on if I remember. In fact, if I didn’t spend so much money on nail polishes, it’d probably go all towards eyeliners instead.

Despite singing the highest of praises for the Be a Bombshell eyeliner in my ipsy October 2012 post, I’m bringing to your attention another eyeliner I discovered.

As I’ve mentioned previously, despite its faults and my anguish towards last month’s box, one of Birchbox’s biggest perks is its points system. With my points, I picked out the Pixi Last Lid Shadow Liner, which I received my first month. I liked what I received the second month, most of it wasn’t makeup and it was more fun things to try than anything I wanted to commit to right away. The third month’s fiasco? Well, let’s just say my post should speak for itself.

A friend recommended Eyeko to me, since it’s another brand that most people really love getting in their Birchboxes and is a product that’s thought of highly.

The black one was out of stock in Birchbox’s website, which was probably for the best since I already have a new go-to black liner in Be a Bombshell. Instead, I ended up picking purple, which my next favourite colour to actually wear despite green being my actual favourite colour. Some things are just more flattering, aren’t they?

On its body, Eyeko describes boasts that it’s “for precise lines, smudge-proof colour, and easy application.” As you can see by the two pictures, the tip is long, thing, and very fine, which makes it great for drawing precise lines.

I’m only a recent convert to liquid liners because like most beginners, I kind of sucked at actually drawing on my eye, but the problem with pencil liner is that it smudges easily causing panda eyes — such a big former problem of mine — and wears off really quickly, no matter what kind of primer or setting powder you tried. I think pencil liners are really ideal to start out with since they’re low-obligation for beginners, but the powder and liquid liner have a more dramatic impact.

My first experience with liquid eyeliner was a Sephora brand — also purple, with sparkles. It was very glamourous-looking but slow to dry, used a thin wand instead of the form of a pencil, I was terrified of jabbing myself in the eye with a glob of sparkly liquid. (I do still use this eyeliner, by the way.)

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner vs Be a Bombshell

Thankfully, Be a Bombshell and Eyeko have both very much redeemed the name of liquid liner for me. As you can see in the comparison photo, Bombshell is actually very much sharpie shaped whereas Eyeko takes the look of something closer to a traditional pencil liner in terms of holding it.

To be honest, I actually weirdly like Bombshell’s shape better — it feels easier to hold for me, and maybe it is the ultra thinness of Eyeko’s tip, but I feel like Bombshell’s sharpee shape is easier to use. Nevertheless, both are great, quick-to-dry, and very dense in pigmentation. Who knows, maybe after a few more uses I’ll prefer Eyeko’s body and tip shape more. They do have more colours.

Against my skin, the purple is very dense and dark-looking. For me, it’s more of a visceral effect rather than actually being very different from wearing black eyeliner. Still, it’s really pretty, and now I’m curious what the other Eyeko colours would be like against my skintone.
